On Monday morning (1st September), the Vale Path Volunteers – the path maintenance team of the Vale of White Horse Ramblers – returned to Sunningwell footpath which begins at the steps above the former Bayworth quarry.

Low-growing brambles and nettles had made this popular route both a trip hazard and a nuisance, but a team of seven volunteers worked hard to clear the way. They cut back overhanging branches and encroaching shrubs, making the full length of the path safe and pleasant to walk once more.

The group also carried out trimming along the two connecting paths (which starts at the right-angled bend of Lincombe Lane) which links with the footpath running through the quarry.

Walkers should note that the far end of the quarry footpath often becomes waterlogged and muddy for several months each year. While the ground remains dry, now is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the newly cleared paths – before the autumn rains return.
